Automatic Data Processing (ADP) Stock Analysis: The Float Premium
Automatic Data Processing · NASDAQ: ADP
edition · Prices through · USD
ADP's earnings upgrade strengthens the case for a durable payroll franchise. It does not make the shares a recession hedge at any price. Client-funds interest and benefits pass-throughs explain a meaningful portion of the latest revenue increase, while the stock still commands roughly 24 times management's implied fiscal 2027 adjusted earnings.

Assessment: a selective quality watchlist candidate, not an indiscriminate defensive buy. Payroll, tax compliance and employee administration remain necessary even when hiring slows. But ADP participates in that slowdown through employee counts, client survival and funds available for investment. A resilient service does not guarantee a resilient valuation.
The most useful distinction is between recurring demand and cyclical earnings support. ADP's October 28 results show both. Higher margins and a raised outlook deserve attention; investors should also ask how much of that improvement survives weaker employment or less favorable reinvestment yields. The franchise: embedded workflows, not immunity
Automatic Data Processing supplies cloud-based human capital management through Employer Services and PEO Services. RUN targets small-business payroll; Workforce Now serves more complex organizations; Lyric HCM addresses larger enterprises. TotalSource's co-employment model adds benefits and employment administration. Switching payroll providers entails data migration, compliance risk and operational disruption, creating a plausible retention advantage rather than a guarantee against competition.
ADP competes for software budgets and outsourcing relationships, not simply payroll transactions. Paychex, Paycom and broader enterprise HCM platforms represent different forms of pressure: price, implementation quality, product breadth and distribution. The investment question is whether ADP can turn its installed base and service expertise into sustained bookings and productivity gains without sacrificing retention. Management's fiscal 2027 outlook calls for Employer Services bookings growth of 4%–7%, but also a 10–30 basis-point decline in client revenue retention from fiscal 2026's 92.1%. That is resilience with some friction, not an accelerating customer lock-in story. ADP release, pp. 2–4; company profile.
Fundamentals: separate payroll growth from the float
| Measure | 2026 | 2025 | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 5,490.7 | 5,175.2 | 6.1% growth |
| GAAP net earnings | 1,125.2 | 1,013.0 | 11.1% growth |
| GAAP diluted EPS | $2.83 | $2.49 | Buybacks amplify earnings growth |
| Adjusted diluted EPS | $2.82 | $2.49 | Non-GAAP; distinct from reported EPS |
| Adjusted EBIT margin | 26.8% | 25.5% | 130 basis points of expansion |
| Client-funds interest revenue | 329.3 | 286.8 | Higher balances and yield |
| Zero-margin PEO benefits pass-throughs | 1,228.6 | 1,131.0 | Revenue without incremental gross profit |
The revenue bridge matters. Of the $315.5 million increase, $97.6 million came from additional zero-margin benefits pass-throughs and $42.5 million from client-funds interest. Together those explain 44.4% of incremental revenue. Subtracting both categories from each period leaves approximately 4.7% growth in the remaining revenue base. This is a simple analytical bridge, not ADP's organic-growth measure and not a claim that the remaining business has uniform margins.
There is genuine operating progress: U.S. pays per control rose 2%, PEO worksite employees rose 2% to about 771,000, and PEO revenue excluding zero-margin benefits pass-throughs grew 4%. Yet management expects only about 1% growth in pays per control for the full fiscal year. The quarter's employment momentum should not be projected indefinitely.
The float is valuable but rate-sensitive. Average client-funds balances were $36.9 billion, earning 3.6%, versus a 3.3% yield a year earlier. Management raised fiscal 2027 client-funds interest guidance to $1.59–$1.61 billion from $1.54–$1.56 billion. Its assumptions use futures and forward curves as of October 27; they are not a guaranteed return or a November macro observation. Portfolio reinvestment can delay the effect of rate changes, so a policy-rate cut need not flow immediately or proportionately into earnings. ADP release, pp. 2–4.
Cash generation: watch the definition and the season
Quarterly operating cash flow was $651.0 million, only modestly above $642.3 million a year earlier. Subtracting $52.7 million of capital expenditures gives $598.3 million; also subtracting $117.1 million of additions to intangibles leaves $481.2 million. The latter is a more conservative investment-adjusted cash measure here, not a company-defined free-cash-flow metric. It recognizes that software investment is economically real even when capitalized.
ADP paid $677.0 million in dividends and spent $758.8 million on common-stock repurchases during the quarter. Those two uses exceed quarterly operating cash flow, but one seasonal quarter is insufficient to diagnose an unsustainable payout. StockAnalysis's trailing September 2026 presentation shows approximately $5.45 billion of operating cash flow and $5.25 billion of free cash flow under its operating-cash-flow-minus-capex convention; that convention does not subtract all intangible additions. Neither measure should be silently substituted for the other. 10-Q, p. 6; StockAnalysis financials.
Balance-sheet liquidity requires the same discipline. September 30 corporate cash and equivalents were $3.277 billion against $4.965 billion of long-term debt. The separately reported $44.733 billion of funds held for clients is not surplus cash available for buybacks: it supports payroll and tax obligations. Treating it as ordinary corporate net cash would materially distort the investment case. 10-Q, pp. 5 and 13.
Valuation: the premium needs earnings delivery
Management raised fiscal 2027 adjusted EPS growth guidance to 10%–12%, from 9%–11%, on fiscal 2026 adjusted EPS of $11.12. That implies approximately $12.23–$12.45 per share, or a $12.34 midpoint. At $293.84, the shares trade at about 23.8 times that midpoint, with a range of 23.6–24.0 times across the implied earnings interval. This is a calculation from management guidance, not an analyst-consensus estimate or a price target. Revenue growth guidance is now about 6%; the 70–90 basis-point adjusted margin expansion outlook is unchanged. ADP release, pp. 3–4.
For a separate historical lens, StockAnalysis reports trailing GAAP EPS of $11.28 through September, implying about 26.0 times earnings at the cutoff price. Do not mix this denominator with adjusted forward EPS. The premium may be defensible for durable cash generation, but it leaves room for disappointment if low-double-digit adjusted EPS growth proves dependent on temporary interest support rather than stronger underlying demand. StockAnalysis financials.
Technicals: a rebound below the adaptive trend
The October 30 close of $293.84 was 6.17% above the 50-session simple moving average of $276.76, but 0.57% below the 14-period Kaufman adaptive moving average of $295.53. That combination describes a broader uptrend whose near-term momentum has not fully recovered. Friday's 2.71% gain alone does not resolve it.
The highest sampled close was $307.94 on October 22; the lowest was $257.68 on October 2. These are closing-price reference points, not intraday extremes or promised support and resistance. A sustained move back above KAMA would improve the short-term picture; a loss of the rising SMA50 would weaken the medium-term case. Neither indicator establishes fair value or a trading probability.
Catalysts: distribution, productivity and the next proof points
On October 28, ADP and PNC announced PNC Payroll by ADP, embedding payroll and HR capabilities into PNC's digital banking experience. This could make acquisition of small-business clients less dependent on standalone software sales. The announcement does not quantify incremental revenue, adoption or launch economics, so the partnership belongs on a catalyst watchlist, not in a quantified earnings forecast. ADP/PNC announcement, October 28.
ADP's quarterly filing says Assist added more than 100,000 clients during the quarter and describes expanded AI agents and Lyric availability in four European markets. Adoption is encouraging, but client counts are not incremental paid subscriptions or an audited AI revenue stream. Subsequent results need to demonstrate better service productivity, bookings or retention. 10-Q, p. 24.
Scenarios: conditions, not invented targets
| Case | Evidence to watch | Portfolio interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Constructive | Bookings reach the upper end of 4%–7%; productivity supports margins; PNC distribution produces measurable adoption. | More of the earnings premium rests on operating execution rather than interest income. |
| Central | About 6% revenue growth and 10%–12% adjusted EPS growth; retention softens within guidance. | A durable compounder, but returns remain sensitive to the entry multiple. |
| Adverse | Employment contracts, retention deteriorates beyond guidance, or reinvestment yields undershoot assumptions. | Slower earnings and multiple compression can coincide despite recurring payroll demand. |
Risks and the decision rule
- Labor sensitivity: fewer employees and small-business closures can reduce payroll activity and client-funds balances.
- Rate and liquidity exposure: investment income is a contributor, not a substitute for core growth; client-funds obligations require disciplined liquidity management.
- Competition and implementation: pricing, migration quality and product execution can affect retention even when compliance demand persists.
- Operational trust: payroll errors, outages, cybersecurity incidents and regulatory changes can damage an unusually sensitive customer relationship.
- Valuation and accounting: pass-through revenue, adjusted margins and capitalized software can make headline comparisons look cleaner than the underlying economics.
Bottom line: ADP offers a credible way to own payroll infrastructure, not a costless hedge against recession. The raised earnings outlook earns a place on the watchlist. A stronger investment case requires either a more forgiving valuation or evidence that bookings, retention and cash generation can sustain the premium without steadily increasing help from the float.
